Marriage has become a real industry in Japan – choose between a traditional Japanese marriage or a western-style marriage! So marriage is evidently popular, or at least rooted in morals. None of my Japanese friends made mention of such proposals, although one did say a few of her male friends had made grand gestures when they knew their girlfriends were expecting it.
But everyone agreed quiet, low-key proposals are more common. My favorite such story came from Mai. Will you marry me? The more important things are, the less he considers and the more he trusts his gut feeling. Just as these simple moments of heartfelt words contrasted with the Western bent toward the big, I found another rather surprising difference: women are often proposing to men here in Japan.
While my survey was by no means exhaustive, two out of the six women I interviewed had proposed to their husbands.

Why are children who are not orphans ending up in orphanages? How can orphanages possibly be on the rise in a country where the number of orphans has steadily decreased? Marriage in Japan is a legal and social institution at the center of the household. Couples are legally married once they have made the change in status on their family registration sheets , without the need for a ceremony. Most weddings are held either according to Shinto traditions or in chapels according to Christian marriage traditions.
Traditionally, marriages were categorized into two types according to the method of finding a partner— omiai , meaning arranged or resulting from an arranged introduction, and ren’ai , in which the husband and wife met and decided to marry on their own—although the distinction has grown less meaningful over postwar decades as Western ideas of love have altered Japanese perceptions of marriage.
