A Dating Site Holds an Experiment to Show How Love Changes People’s Faces

Qualitative studies indicated that cancer survivors may be worried about finding a partner in the future, but whether this concern is warranted is unknown. Correlations were used to investigate relationships between interest in a date and assessment of traits. However, widowed respondents were much less interested in a date with a cancer survivor, and women showed less interest in a cancer survivor during active follow-up relative to survivors beyond follow-up. Cancer survivors do not have to expect any more problems in finding a date than people without a cancer history, and can wait a few dates before disclosing. Survivors dating widowed people and survivors in active follow-up could expect more hesitant reactions and should disclose earlier. Finding a romantic partner is a central goal in life for most people and essential for well-being [ 1 , 2 ]. Especially when dealing with a stressful life event as cancer, having a partner can be advantageous: Partnered people on active cancer treatment adapt better both physically and psychologically as compared to those without a partner [ 3 — 13 ]. However, knowledge about establishing a new relationship following cancer is lacking. In addition, several studies showed that cancer survivors are less often married or partnered as compared to healthy peers [ 15 — 17 ]. As a result, there is a growing population of single cancer survivors who will be faced with finding a new partner after they completed their treatment.

Dating Experiments

All that time you spent filling out questions for your OkCupid profile? Barely anybody reads the answers. OkCupid co-founder Christian Rudder has blogged about three experiments that the site has run, highlighting data that mostly show that people are extremely shallow and easily manipulated. Users who stuck around wound up responding to first messages faster, spent more time chatting than usual and exchanged contact information sooner. But when the photos returned, the blind dates generally stopped talking.

The site showed profiles to one group of users who saw pictures and text, while another group of users saw the profiles with photos only.

Online dating site OkCupid revealed on Monday the results of a study it conducted, in which it told subscribers they were more compatible than they really were. The result? There’s something to the power of suggestion. The experiment worked in the other direction as well.

Was a bit disappointing considering it was the site I relied on in the past for online dating. Maybe I’d still find their website useful, but the iPhone.

In a blog post last summer, Rudder discussed several experiments, unbeknownst to users, that included the site intentionally suggesting bad matches to see how people would behave. Rudder said various patterns go into match-making. They include common interests, mutual recent breakups and the idea that opposites attract. And 24 percent of the pairs, about twice the number expected, exchanged contact information before photos were restored, the book says.

Yet many of those conversations screeched to a halt when the photos reappeared. Rudder said he thinks people in the future will opt out of providing so much information about themselves. Among insights he shared Tuesday were that women on the site were attracted to men their own age while men ages 20 to 50 generally were attracted to somethings. Rudder said OKCupid has developed an application program interface, or API, to allow access to some such information, but he said the company has no plans to release it soon.

And we keep making up more ways to do it. I do it too. He said he takes comfort in his site as a tool to get more people meeting face to face.

By Josie Ensor , San Francisco. OKCupid, the popular dating site, has admitted to carrying out controversial Facebook-style psychological experiments on its users, saying it intentionally mismatched people to test its technology. Christian Rudder, the company’s founder, published a blog on Monday detailing three recent experiments they had performed that manipulated users’ perceptions to test its matching algorithm. They told people who were bad matches 30 per cent that they actually had a compatibility score of 90 per cent.

By James O’Toole July 28, PM ET. Facebook isn’t the only social network that experiments on its users. Online dating site OkCupid revealed on.

Dating website OKCupid has revealed that it experimented on its users, including putting the “wrong” people together to see if they would connect. It revealed the tests after the uproar over Facebook manipulating the feeds of its users. As well as allowing users to upload pictures and set up dating profiles, OKCupid asks users questions and matches them with potential partners based on the answers.

Further experiments suggested that “when we tell people they are a good match, they act as if they are. Even when they should be wrong for each other. In another experiment, OKCupid ran profiles with pictures and no profile text for half of its test subjects, and vice versa for the rest. The results showed that people responded solely to the pictures. For potential daters, Mr Rudder said that “your actual words are worth… almost nothing”.

The revelations come as a result of Facebook saying that in late June, it changed some “news feeds to control which emotional expressions the users were exposed to” as part of research in collaboration with two US universities. Many users and observers felt the actions were unethical. OKCupid said that experiments like the ones that it and Facebook ran are part and parcel of creating websites.

Even good ideas could be better. Experiments are how you sort all this out. These include other major dating sites, like Match.

Here’s a fascinating experiment: A woman’s profile — full of obvious red flags — is put up on dating site OkCupid. Within hours “she” is inundated with romantic messages. Men just look at the pictures? If you’ve ever dated someone who isn’t quite what he or she initially seemed, please take comfort. Please feel relieved, then, that someone took it upon themselves to prove that if you are a man and you are dating a woman who isn’t all there, it’s entirely your fault. You see, in their hearts men just don’t care if their lady friend is erratic — even beyond the bounds of the law — as long as she’s good-looking.

I am droolingly grateful to Mandatory. Two friends decided to put together a dating profile on OkCupid. It was a profile to which anyone in their right minds would have given an askance look. For here was a woman who had several severe instabilities and expressed them with charming openness.
